Review: Once Bitten, Twice Shy by Jennifer Rardin

Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Jaz Parks #1
by: Jennifer Rardin
$7.99 mass market paperback
Orbit Books
Paranormal Fantasy / Vampires
Released: July 2009

I'm Jaz Parks. My boss is Vayl, born in Romania in 1744. Died there too, at the hand of his vampire wife, Liliana. But that's ancient history. For the moment Vayl works for the C.I.A. doing what he does best--assassination. And I help. You could say I'm an Assistant Assassin. But then I'd have to kick your ass.

Our current assignment seemed easy. Get close to a Miami plastic surgeon named Assan, a charmer with ties to terrorism that run deeper than a buried body. Find out what he's meeting with that can help him and his comrades bring America to her knees. And then close his beady little eyes forever. Why is it that nothing's ever as easy as it seems?

This book sat on my to-be-read pile for months before I finally picked it up.  After finishing it, I kicked myself for waiting so long to read it.  Jaz is such a powerful character.  She grabs you by the shirt front and drags her into her world of vampire assassins, paranoid tech geeks, powerful psychics, and bubblegum chewing PIs.  The cast of characters is amazing, and each has their own individual voice.  I love how Jaz has multiple personalities in her head that have a voice of their own, and point things out to her that she otherwise might have missed.  You might worry about an assassin that hears voices, but the books are written in such a way that you can't help but chuckle at the humor and wit of the characters.

For those of you who are considering reading the entire series, it's awesome.  One thing to note is that Jennifer Rardin passed away in 2010, so no more books are in the future for this series.  There are eight in the series, and I was really worried that the series would end on a cliffhanger, but while everything wasn't completely wrapped up, I'm happy with how it ended.  Yay!

Cover Reveal: Her Savage Scot by Christina Phillips

Release date: 20th November 2013

Aila, princess of Pictland, swore long ago she would do anything within her power to help defeat the Vikings who invaded her land and murdered her husband. But after meeting Connor, her frozen heart thaws and once again she imagines a future filled with love and passion.
When Connor delivers the message from his king, Aila becomes a pawn in a deadly game of politics. Her heart belongs to Connor, but she must marry the prince of Dal Riada – Connor’s half-brother. But the fates have other plans for the star-crossed lovers as they fight their enemies and themselves to find true love.
Read Chapter One of Her Savage Scot
She lifted her head and Connor’s lips brushed hers. A fleeting, tantalizing touch. A touch that seared her core with a wild, reckless longing.
“I’ve wanted to kiss you since the first moment I saw you.”
His ragged whisper scorched her parted lips. She hadn’t been mistaken. “I thought you far from interested that first day. You surely didn’t give any indication of your thoughts.”
He moved closer. The breadth of his shoulders blocked out the rest of the world, his white linen shirt sculpted his impressive chest. And the weave of his plaid branded her through the softness of her gown.
“How could I? You were an aloof Pictish lady and I a mere savage Scot.”
She leaned into him, soaking up the hard ridges of his chest, the fresh scent of his hair, the faint sweetness of mead on his breath. “So what has changed?”
“Nothing.” His fingers tightened around hers and his eyes enslaved her. “Yet everything.”
His words curled through her heart, shimmered in her blood. Nothing. Yet everything. The chance of them having a future together was remote. And yet she had been given this time with him. Moments to savor, to cherish. To remember for the rest of her life.

The Highland Warrior Chronicles
From the Kingdom of Dal Riada, Scots warriors Connor MacKenzie, Cameron MacNeil and Ewan MacKinnon pledge to keep the peace in the wild Highlands of Pictland. But each man is destined to fall in love with a Pictish princess - three cousins who are determined to save their beloved land from the savage invaders. Instead they lose their hearts to their wild foreign warriors.

Review & Blog Tour: Saving Alexander by Susan Mac Nichol

Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

“Alexander Montgomery was in a lot of pain.  Pain of his own choosing but pain nonetheless.”
When this is the first sentence you read, how can you not dive head first into the world that Susan Mac Nichol created?  Between the beautiful characters and the who-dun-it mystery, this book contained every element needed for a masterpiece.  Love, heartache, struggle, and redemption.
Alexander Montgomery was a product of his past.  Lured into a cult and abused by a man, his soul was battered and despite his conventional therapy Alexander needed more.  Sessions at the hands of a sadist, he coped with the world the best way he knew how.  His life as a successful author was skyrocketing as his words were coming to life on the big screen with man he mentally sculpted the role around leading the cast.
Christopher Sage was the epitome of good looks and sex appeal. So when his eyes locked on the mismatched ones of the best-selling author, he was smitten.  Unexplained accidents begin to mimic the book and no one feels safe.  Sage and Alexander begin spending time together and the air begins to sizzle around them until jealousy rears its ugly head almost destroying it all.
I fell in love with Sage and Alexander.  Sage’s love and patience with Alexander go beyond explanation.  Alexander has never had anyone who made him feel the way that Sage does and it scares him…A LOT, but with the support of a wonderful man he fights for his happiness.  This story is riddled with heartache and sadness.  Love finds its way and gives them strength.
Susan Mac Nichol creates theses amazing worlds of strong gay men,  throws in some action and suspense, and BAM…a masterpiece!  She has concocted her own recipe for success and it hasn’t let her down yet.

Review: The Reunion Lie by Lucy King

The Reunion Lie
by: Lucy King
$4.99 mass market paperback
Harlequin KISS
Contemporary Romance / Christmas
Released: November 2013

It was only meant to be a little white lie….

Inventing a fake fiancĂ© was an act of desperation for Zoe Montgomery—a knee-jerk response to her horrifying high school reunion! But now that she's convinced London's most unattainable bachelor to play the part, her little white lie is spiraling out of control.

Because everyone wants a piece of tycoon Dan Forrester. Including Zoe! Especially once she's seen the view from his bedroom—this might be a fake engagement, but she's certainly not faking anything else!

Now the reunion is over, and Zoe and Dan have convinced the world they're meant to be! But convincing each other? A whole different challenge….

This is a story about how high school bullying can affect you years after you graduate, and how learning how to heal from it and move on can set you free.  Even though Zoe is a successful businesswoman, she tries impressing her old bullies by zeroing in on the first hot guy she sees alone at the bar.  After begging him for help, he agrees with the idea they'll go their separate ways the next day.  When the engagement announcement shows up in the paper the next day, Dan and Zoe realize things may have gone a bit too far, but the thought of never seeing each other again seems like a horrible idea.  This was a great story about two people who weren't looking for love end up finding it in the strangest place, but must first bury their past if they want a bright future.

Blog Tour & Guest Post: Surrendering to Her Sergeant by Angel Payne

It’s SO exciting to be back at RomFan Reviews! Thanks so much to all of these
wonderful ladies on the blog who are so selfless about supporting our genre…and the happy-ever-afters we all love so much!

I was so thrilled about the kind words that Michele posted about Handcuffed By her Hero, Book #2 in the W.I.L.D. Boys of Special Forces series. Thank you again! It’s doubly special to me when a reader “gets it” about these books, because even though they are fiction, I try as hard as possible to instill these heroes with not only the top qualities of exemplary Dominants, but the honor and character of the men who willingly join our elite fighting troops in the nation’s military. Getting to combine all these attributes into characters that have fulfilled lives and, best of all, love stories with those classic happy endings…well, it’s all such a dream fulfilled.

In Book 3 of the series, out now, you’re going to meet Sergeant Ethan Archer. He’s an interesting man, for certain, having turned his back on a cushy college ride and a “sure thing” job at daddy’s company to instead enlist with the Army and pursue the goal of serving in the Special Forces. His heroine is fiery and gorgeous Ava Chestain, who works as a stylist to an elite TV starlet in Hollywood. When the danger of Ethan’s work collides with the glamour of Ava’s, it’s an interesting and exciting mash-up!

I hope you really enjoy Surrendering To Her Sergeant. Drop me a line and let me know what you think of the book. I love to hear from readers!

Corporal Ethan Archer has just earned his sergeant's stripes, and a trip to the fun and sun of LA is just the celebration that the guys on his Special Forces team have deemed the perfect celebration. Ethan has ulterior motives for agreeing so readily to the vacation. He can't forget a magical hour in a North Cascades forest last winter, shared with an indigo-eyed goddess named Ava Chestain, who now calls LA her home. Ava is a makeup artist for Bella Lanza, star of the wildly-successful nighttime drama Dress Blues. When Ethan and his buddies finagle a visit to the set, his reunion with Ava melts the months away—but their time is cut short by Bella, who’s determined to rekindle her own naughty past with Ethan. His efforts to push Bella off are thwarted when the unit is called to secretly cut their vacation short in the name of assisting the CIA on a harrowing plot to destroy the West Coast. Part of the plan? Someone has to get closer to Bella--and Ethan's the logical choice. Though Ethan risks his career by telling Ava about the plot, her trust is an impossible gift to earn. Her passion is a different story. As his willing submissive, Ava gives him the fire his body craves...and the surrender his soul needs. She's a dream come true--until the cuffs come off and the sun comes up. As Ava gives Ethan more nights with her body, it becomes harder to keep hiding her heart from his touch, too. Every time she drops at his feet, she finds herself tumbling for him in deeper, more disconcerting ways. Bella's interference intensifies her struggle against past demons, and the man who stirs them so. When a terrifying turn of events escalates the terrorists’ plan into full reality, Ethan must make decisions that will either kill or save them all--and his plan includes the necessity of Ava's trust. Can surrender to him with everything she is--including what could be her last breath?

Meet Angel Payne

Angel Payne is a book lover, hopeless romantic, pop culture geek, shoe addict, coffee-aholic, and occasional vinophile, too. She's been hooked on books since childhood but it got even worse in her twenties, when she discovered romances—the hotter, the better. Her path toward erotic romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for her college newspaper, artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, and a very, very bad try at a Young Adult novel. These days, she lives in California on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with her amazing husband, beautiful daughter and a terribly crazy dog. She has the best life ever, and never forgets to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it.

Review: Demonic Persuasion by Kim Knox

Demonic Persuasion
Demonic Liaisons #2

Ellora's Cave Publishing
Sci-Fi Erotica
Released: October 2013

Fadeyka Bryce is on the run. She uncovered a dark family secret and now there’s a price on her head. Her best plan is to hide out in the last place they would ever look for her—a pleasure planet—until she can buy herself a new name and a new face.

However, the Athanasios—a race of pure energy—have plans for Fade. They’ve been waiting for her, for her unique flesh, and they ache to experience pleasure. They can become as many lovers as Fade could ever dream…except for one man. Taras Foster.

But then, the Athanasios want him too.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, so when I saw this book I snatched it up.  Kim Knox is my go-to author when I'm in the mood for something dark and steamy.  This book follows Fadeyka as she encounters the Athanasios for the first time, and learns of the dark pleasure they can provide.  It's a short story, but there was nothing lacking in story or character development.  Once again, a great book by Kim Knox.

Paranormal Fantasy

An estranged mate, a mangled body and a powerful demon who calls her by name…

As a Realm Walker for the Agency, Juliana Norris tracks deadly paranormal quarry using her unique ability to see magical signatures. She excels at her job, but her friends worry about her mysterious habit of dying in the line of duty without staying dead. That's only the first of her secrets.

Most people don't know Juliana became the mate of master vampire Thomas Kendrick before he abandoned her seven years ago. Most people don't know the horrors she endured at the hands of the vampire he left in command. Most people don't know her true parentage, or why a demon on a world-threatening rampage has taken a personal interest in her…

Even as Juliana pursues the demon, it goes after all she holds dear—including Thomas, who is back to claim her for his own. But if she can't reconcile her past and learn to trust herself again, she will lose him forever.

Juliana's heart broke when Thomas left, and she's spent the past seven years trying to forget him.  So when he suddenly shows up expecting her to fall into his arms, she's shocked.  Even though she's mad at him, she's still drawn to him, which in her line of work can be a deadly distraction.  For some reason, she keeps coming back to life after she dies.  Perhaps her parentage has something to do with it, but that's a secret she'll take to the grave.  She's just trying to keep her head above water, but when Thomas comes back, she realizes how empty her life has been.  But with demons chasing her, and Thomas being all caveman towards her, she's just hoping to get through the mission without dying again, or having her heart broken.  I wanted to kick Thomas in the head for the reason he left for seven years, forcing Juliana to go through a horrible ordeal.  Otherwise, it was a good story.

Review: Tempt the Stars by Karen Chance

Tempt the Stars
Cassie Palmer #6
by: Karen Chance
$7.99 mass market paperback
Signet Select
Paranormal Fantasy
Released: October 2013

Being a goddess is a lot less fun than you might think. Especially when you’re only a half goddess, and you only found out about it recently, and you still don’t know what you’re doing half the time. And when you’ve just used your not-so-reliable powers to burglarize the booby-trapped office of a vampire mob boss.

Yeah, that part sucks.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Cassandra Palmer, aka the Pythia, the freshly minted chief seer of the supernatural world. After all, Cassie still has to save a friend from a fate worse than death, deal with an increasingly possessive master vampire, and prevent a party of her own acolytes from unleashing a storm of fury upon the world. Totally just your average day at the office, right?

The Cassie Palmer series is one of my favorites because she's not your typical walk in and kick ass heroine we're used to from the paranormal fantasy genre.  Poor Cassie has had to wing it since book one, and even though she doesn't know what she's doing most of the time and nobody bothers to keep her updated, she still manages to come out on top.  Sometimes just barely, but it still counts.  I'm also a huge vampire fan (although not of the sparkly kind), but for this series I'd have to say I prefer Pritkin to Mircea.  I fell in love with Pritkin and his snarly take no prisoners attitude when he tried killing Cassie, believing her to be a demon.  At the end of Hunt the Moon, I was left with my jaw on the floor going "No!  What the hell was Pritkin thinking!"  Then the horrible two year wait to find out what happened in Tempt the Stars, but it was worth it.  I've loved seeing Cassie come into her powers, and realize that burying your head in the sand is not the best way to face life.  With an awesome cast of characters and a plot that hurls you along at a breakneck pace, I would recommend this series to anyone who loves the paranormal fantasy (or urban fantasy, if you prefer).  If you want to dip your feet into the genre pool, this is the one to get your feet wet with.

Review: Warlord's Mercy by Cynthia Sax

Warlord's Mercy
Barbarian Claims #4
By: Cynthia Sax
$5.60 eBook
Ellora's Cave Publishing
Sci-Fi Erotica
Released: August 2013

Tolui, a clone of a powerful Warlord, is a male without a homeland or a future. He’s doomed to never mate, and ruthlessly wages war, seeking to give his clone brothers a planet system to call their own, a place where they can live without persecution.

When Tolui crashes on a deserted planet and meets a small human female, he discovers everything he knows about clones is a lie. Lea, his destined mate, unleashes the passion he’s suppressed over his lifetime. He wants her. He needs her. He’ll do anything to bond with her.

But he won’t share her. Tolui’s greatest battle will be the fight for Lea’s heart. To win her love, he’ll face hundreds of his clone brothers, men who look exactly like him.

Like the other books in the Barbarian Claims series, this book is hot!  The sex scenes leave you panting, and the super-hot alpha males make you drool a little.  After all the hints in prior books about how Tolui is evil and must be destroyed, I was a bit surprised to see him get his own book.  But I'm glad he did, because we get to see his side of the story, and how he's not really evil.  All he wants is a place to call home, and the love of a woman.  The characters jump off the pages at you, and I for one love this series and the wonderful world Ms. Sax has created for us.

Review: A Study in Darkness by Emma Jane Holloway

A Study in Darkness
Baskerville Affair #2
by: Emma Jane Holloway
$7.99 mass market paperback
Del Ray Publishing
Historical Fantasy / Steampunk
Released: October 2013

When a bomb goes off at 221B Baker Street, Evelina Cooper is thrown into her uncle Sherlock’s world of mystery and murder. But just when she thought it was safe to return to the ballroom, old, new, and even dead enemies are clamoring for a place on her dance card.

Before Evelina’s even unpacked her gowns for a country house party, an indiscretion puts her in the power of the ruthless Gold King, who recruits her as his spy. He knows her disreputable past and exiles her to the rank alleyways of Whitechapel with orders to unmask his foe.

As danger mounts, Evelina struggles between hiding her illegal magic and succumbing to the darker aspects of her power. One path keeps her secure; the other keeps her alive. For rebellion is brewing, a sorcerer wants her soul, and no one can protect her in the hunting grounds of Jack the Ripper.

In the second book of the series we find Evelina up to her eyeballs in mystery and danger once again.  This time though, she is facing danger all on her own.  This is such a great series because the plots are so complex and harrowing, and you never know what's around the bend.  With most books, you can kind of guess where the story's going, or who the bad guy is.  That is not the case in these books.  The plots and mystery keep you turning the pages until the end, wondering who will reveal themselves as the monster this time.  This book follows not only Evelina, but a whole host of secondary characters that have a voice as well.  In the first book, it was a bit overwhelming trying to learn all the characters and keep their path in mind, since all the characters' stories are interwoven together.  If you're looking for a great in-depth mystery series with a touch of steampunk and magic, this is a great series for you to try.

Review and Tour: Always Me by Jo-Anna Walker

Always Me
Book 2 - Shattered Series
Jo-Anna Walker

Forgetting is hard to do.

Tori McLeod survived the sadistic wrath of a madman at the cost of the love of her life. Always a survivor, she’s determined to move on with her life, for her sake, and the sake of her son, even if she has to leave everything and everyone behind.

Two years have passed since she lost Sebastian Chelios. He was gone, but Tori can still feel the raw magnetism pulling her toward a ghost.

Relationships change and new bonds form. Budding feelings tempt Tori, but she continues to ache for Sebastian.

Whispers of danger lurk around the corner and questions regarding Jose remain unanswered.

Can Tori move on with her life when a dark shadow from her past revisits her? With Jose still being out there, will Tori and her son ever be truly safe?

Two years had passed since Sebastian Chelios had died. Two years since being told that Jose Alvarez was still out there. And two years since I was told I was pregnant.

Pregnant with Sebastian’s baby.

God, who knew that that would happen?

A result of my forgetfulness of the pill. But it was well worth it when I looked into the eyes of my baby. Sebastian’s baby. Our child.

I tried to forget. But the calendar the wall beckoned like a tease, and my eyes darted to the dreaded numbers. My mind went back to those horrible couple of days.

It was like a bad horror movie in mind. Jose kidnapping me. Sebastian showing up. Us both shot. The blur of the hospital. My lover. Dead. Doctors and nurses in my face. Then news of the pregnancy. My head whirled when I got sucked into my thoughts. Real, as if it was yesterday. Realizing I would have to raise a child on my own.

But now…every day I looked at Antonio and ached. His eyes had slipped from blue to brown, and he reminded me so of Sebastian.

His father would never see him. know him.

Fresh tears filled my eyes but I them off. I headed to the front door and made sure it was locked. I looked out the window and noticed a big black car a couple of houses away. Relief fluttered through me. The Feds were watching. Protecting me and my son from Jose.

A scream came through the baby monitor on my counter.

I ran up the stairs in my small two bedroom house and headed right to my baby’s room. After throwing the door I stood there, panting, gripping my chest as my heart raced against my rib cage.

My son lay there, looking up at from his crib, a big smile on his beautiful chubby face.

I sucked in a breath and tried to the thumping in my ears. “Hi, baby. You sure like giving your mama a heart attack, don’t you?”

He giggled. Yup, definitely Sebastian’s kid.

About The Author:

I'm a new self-published author who just got introduced to the writing world early 2013. My aunt suggested that I write a story because I'm an avid reader but I waved it off and left it alone. Well this year, a story came to me and I went with it. It took me a little bit but I finally got a story idea that worked and now I can't stop or control the characters/stories that keep popping up in my head.
I'm born and raised in Canada and I live with my very wonderful and supportive husband, Michael. We don't have any children (yet) unless you count our two cats. He's been my rock through this whole new experience for me. I couldn't have done it without him and my friends and family.
One of the many things I love about this new chapter in my life is that I'm learning constantly. It's never a dull moment and as long as one person likes my story, I am happy.

Genre: Modern Romance

219 Pages
Once again, I was sucked into the Shattered world of Tori, Sebastian, Garrith, Keisha and Brett.  We pick up two years later and Tori’s still in hiding, but now she has Antonio who is the spitting image of his father.  Armed with her friends by her side, Tori struggles with the loss of Sebastian.  Her pain was so complete and consuming, but always feeling the sensation of being watched. She waited like the note said, but for how long? How long does someone put their life on hold?  Brett continues to love and care about her, but Tori just does not feel the same.  Friend’s are all they would ever be.
Dark cloaked figures evoked uneasiness in Tori.  When a note left in Antonio’s nursery could only be from one man, Jose, she is terrified.  He had promised he would find her.  Jose wasn’t the only one watching from the shadows.  Sebastian had never been far especially after learning her had a son.  Now he had two people he would kill for to protect and evil had found them.
Anger. Fear. Love. Protection. Every imaginable emotion rocketed through Tori when she recognized the tattoos.  Sebastian.  Their passion instantly reignites.  Holy Hell….every girl should have someone to give her spine tingling, breathtaking orgasms like these!  I was   attached to these characters and felt every emotion.  Not everyone was excited to have him back. Jose begins making his presence known more strongly and Sebastian is ready to protect what is his at all cost.  However, the damage done will affect everyone.
“Sebastian possessed me, owned me. He had my body, heart, and soul wrapped tightly in his hand, controlling me. He pushed me, devoured me. Dove under my skin until I broke. Took me to higher limits than I ever thought would happen. He loved me. Love.”
I cannot say how much I am in love with this series. Always Me had murder, suspense, love and heartache. The characters are complex and honest.  And who didn’t love Malvado?  He was like the unsung champion and learning his history made me love him even more.  Tori and Sebastian..ugh..these two use sex to work out their emotions in all the “fast and hard” or morning lovemaking.  These two were meant to be together.
