Emma is a Prime, one of a few who are masters of sorcery.  She reports directly to the Queen, and is willing to do what must be done to keep the Empire safe.  Her latest mission is to keep Clare, an unregistered mentath, alive.  Someone is killing mentaths and harvesting their organs, and Emma must get to the bottom of it.  But the treachery against the Queen is more widespread than she'd originally feared, and it will take all of her considerable talents to dig out the traitors and stop the conspiracy.  With players closing in from all sides, Emma must use Clare's considerable brain power to assist her.  And her Shield, Mikal, whose loyalty is still in question.

Just another day in the life of a Prime.

This book is intricately woven with tales of sorcery, logic, conspiracy, with just a dash of humor.  Ms. Saintcrow has woven a wonderfully dark and dangerous world, where men and animals have mechanical modifications, and nearly everything uses sorcery to work.  She manages to strip away the glamour and beauty of the age, and reveal the darker under workings that can make your skin crawl.  Don't look for romance in this book, but rather a wonderfully complex plot that will leave you wondering until the very end.  Great book.
