Ellora's Cave Romanticon October 11th to October 14th

It’s the end of the world as EC knows it
Ellora’s Cave takes on the Mayan Apocalypse for RomantiCon® 2012

What would you wear if it was the last weekend you ever partied? What would you drink, and how much?  What would you tell all of your friends?  What would you Tweet? And if it was your last day on earth, would you spend it with Ellora’s Cave?

RomantiCon® 2012, the annual Romantica® conference held by Ellora’s Cave, asks its authors, readers, and fans to imagine its conference is during the end of the world.  The theme for this year’s RomantiCon®, “Mayan Apocalypto,” focuses on the popular concept that the world will end with the Mayan calendar on Dec. 21, 2012.

The four-day conference will take place at the McKinley Grand Hotel, in Canton, OH, from Thursday, Oct. 11, until Sunday, Oct. 14.
The entire conference encourages attendees to leave their inhibitions at the door.

There will be a two-part party during the weekend, and animated costumes and extreme dancing are really encouraged!

Participants will get a chance to hang loose with some of Ellora’s Cavemen, the chiseled models who fire up the imagination of writers and readers alike.  For those who would rather spend time with the ladies, there will be dance lessons hosted by Cleveland’s Exotic Dance, a studio encouraging inexperienced people to take erotic dance courses.

Founder Jaid Black started Ellora’s Cave with the philosophy that well behaved women rarely make history. She has been encouraging women to refuse to behave ever since.  Romantica® doesn’t fit in the tight confines of traditional romance genres, and neither does a conference celebrating such a unique group of authors and fans.

Who needs Vegas when the world is going to end anyway? What happens in Canton, stays in Canton. Honorary Cavemen and Cavewomen will have a weekend to remember with the trusted folks from Ellora’s Cave.

Review: Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster

Kiss of Steel

by: Bec McMaster
ISBN#9781402270277
$6.99 mass market paperback
Sourcebooks Casablanca
Historical Romance / Steampunk
Released: September 2012

Ever since the death of her father forced Honoria and her siblings into the Whitechapel district, she's struggled to make ends meet.  She's kept her head down, trying to stay out of the way of Blade, the vampire who holds iron control over the rookery where she lives.  When he summons her, she's terrified of what she might find, for the rumors of his cruelty have flown for years.  He offers her protection, but only if she becomes his blood slave.  She reluctantly agrees when she realizes she has no choice.  For there are those in the upper Echelon who would see her dead, and it seems Blade is the only one who can keep her hidden.  But as the days pass, she begins to see the man under the monster.  Now it's not a matter of losing her blood to him, but her heart...

Honoria is just trying to make ends meet for her family since the death of her father.  She's gone hungry to make sure they're fed, and she's trying to keep her head down to avoid the men out to kill her.  She shows amazing courage and resiliance, even after losing everything.  She's scared to death of being a blood meal for a vampire, but overcomes her fright to do what she has to for her family.  Blade's not as evil as the book first portrays him to be, and I was glad to see the kernal of good in him he tries to hide.  I enjoyed this book, and will keep my eyes open for any more Bec McMaster writes.

Interview with Paranormal author Kristin Miller

Tell us about your new/upcoming release Last Vamp Standing?

Tortured by demonic voices, Dante's soul is as black as they come. But when he meets Ariana—an innocent vampire fighting demons of her own—he second-guesses everything he's ever known about sacrifice, passion, and soul-scorching love.
Before Dante wages war against Crimson Bay's greatest threat, he must make a choice: love Ariana the way she deserves, risking her life in the process—or fight to protect her, unleashing the monster he's determined to bury.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part for me was doing justice to the characters and the world I’d already created. Each of the couples from the earlier books in the Vampires of Crimson Bay series (InterVamption and Vamped Up), make appearances in Last Vamp Standing. I made tons of notes to make sure I wouldn’t forget the path or quirky trait of one of the earlier characters.

Can you tell us what you have in the works we will see in the future?

I have two novellas in my erotic paranormal romance “Isle of Feralon” series coming out next year from Harlequin Cravings. (Claimed by Desire released May 1, 2012 and Forbidden by Fate released July 1. The two additional novellas don’t have release dates yet.) I also have a new paranormal romance/urban fantasy series in the works, but you’ll have to stay tuned for announcements on that.

If I was a first time reader of your books, which one would you recommend I start with and why?

I’d start with InterVamption. The Vampires of Crimson Bay series reads more like a trilogy than a series in the sense that there is an overarching villain and characters who have journeys that span all three books. While you can definitely pick up Last Vamp Standing and enjoy the read, you’d probably get more out of the book if you start from the beginning.

What else would you like readers to know about you or your work?

That I put myself in all of it. If there’s something I love to eat or drink, it’s there. If there’s a place I dream of visiting, it’s there, too. Hopes, fears, inner conflicts, I’m in there somewhere or have been at some point in my life. Writing is not something that comes effortlessly to me. I have to work extremely hard to make my stories come to life…so I add a pinch of me to the story, hoping my hopes and dreams breathe life into the words.

What books or authors have most influenced your life?

Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier has influenced my life the most. The moment I started reading that book, I knew I was lost. I still get lost in duMaurier’s Manderley, and I’ve visited there five times already. (Maybe I should read it a sixth time…it’s been awhile.)

When you have some down time what would we find you doing?

When I’m not writing or taking care of my family (I’ve got two little ones and a husband who keep me pretty busy), I love to watch shameless reality television. Yup, I’m one of those. I also love going to the movies and discovering fabulous hole-in-the-wall restaurants, though I don’t get to do those things as often as I’d like.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author?

Don’t quit. The business is difficult and rejection gets thrown at you at every turn. Whatever you do, don’t stop. Keep writing. It’s easy to think that you’re the only writer who has it tough, but that’s not the case. Writing is hard, no matter which way you slice it. Some just hide the pain better than others. ;)

What’s a guilty pleasure you have?

Mocha Frappuccinos. I’ve got a serious soft spot for chocolately-goodness.

Who’s more fun, bad boys or perfect gentlemen and why?

Can I say a mixture of both? I think a gentleman without a touch of attitude could get boring over time, but a bad boy with no regard for how to truly treat a lady wouldn’t make for a good catch either. The man has got to know when to be naughty and when to be nice.

If you came with a warning label, what would it say?

Warning: Does not think before speaking.

Paris Ashcroft is no stranger to having a liaison with a married woman.  But, there is only one woman he has his heart set on Sophia Lovich.

Sophia and her husband Alexander have no secrets and on this special night they have a plan and they can only hope that Paris is willing to go along with it.

I only had one problem with this story…it ended too soon for me.  I was lost in the triangle created by the characters.  Although Paris is a ladies man and has been with many married women the plan that Sophia has in store for him puts him in new territory.  Very delicious and tantalizing story, if you are looking for that quick just before bed book I suggest you grab this one.  Of course I cannot guarantee you will not be heading for the shower or reaching for your significant other by the time you finish reading it.  I look forward to Ms. Ellis’ next foray into her Romps and Rakehells series.

Review: Rise of Hope by Kaily Hart

Rise of Hope
by: Kaily Hart
ISBN#9781426894268
$3.99 ebook
Carina Press
Paranormal Romance
Released: August 2012

Devon has spent her entire life locked in a compound, unable to touch anyone.  Her one solace is the yearly hike she's allowed to go on.  This year, she vows to escape, no matter the cost.  Before she can, she's kidnapped by an attractive but frightening man.  He claims to be able to keep her safe, but she soon realizes she will be trading one prison for another.  Once safe, she's told she's part of a dying race of humans known as the Vadïm, and that's the reason she's been kept in isolation.  It also explains the intricate tattoos all over her body.  And when she realizes her tattoos march those of Seth, her rescuer, she knows her world's about to change forever.

Seth is a mercenary who doesn't buy into his boss's belief that they're part of a secret dying race of humans.  But the paychecks are good, so he agrees to go on a rescue mission and retrieve a female.  He doesn't expect the fiery temptress who challenges him at every turn, yet stirs his heart in a way no other ever has.  The matching tattoos on their bodies mean they're destined to be together, but he's never been the settling down type.  He's not sure if his jaded heart will ever open enough to allow anyone, even his destined mate, inside.

This book has the potential to start a series.  The female Vadïm have been captured and held prisoner, and it's up to the males to find them and keep them safe.  The Vadïm have been well written, in that their powers aren't unbelievable, and their humanity grounds them and makes us relate.  I enjoyed the idea of destined mates bearing identical marks, and the secondary characters were believable, making me hope to one day read their stories.  I enjoyed this book, and hope to see more of this world in the future.

Review: Impenetrable by C.L. Sholey

Impenetrable (New World #3)
by: C.L. Sholey
ISBN#9781611604153
$4.99 ebook
Torrid Books
Sci-Fi Erotica
Released: August 2012

Kidnapped from Earth, Piper is locked in a lightless room and tortured for what seems like an eternity.  When she's finally rescued, she's not sure if she should be relieved or frightened by the change in captors.  Jago explains that his race has no females, and they've determined that Earth woman are compatible to mate with.  And while Piper's still reeling from that little info timebomb, Jago's leader, Cobra, steps forward and tells her he thinks Jago's too young to have sex (even though Jago is 400 years old) and thinks he should be the one to impregnate her.  All Piper needs to decide is whether or not she should help save a dying race, and which man will become the father of her child.

Piper gets ripped from her home and tortured, then saved by a huge man who tells her she's his race's last hope of survival.  She's scared spitless, and has to acclimate herself to a new planet, people and their customs.  It's a lot of pressure, but over time she starts to relax and learns to like her new home.  I wasn't horribly disappointed, but I wasn't horribly impressed, either.  It seems like nearly every sci-fi romance I read starts out with the girl getting kidnapped from Earth, and the idea has gotten old.  I liked it, but I doubt I'll read it again.

Jump ahead three years when Cassie and Blaze are brought together again and watch the sparks fly.  Will they find love this time or will they again be torn apart?

Sam Crescent has become a new author that I will be watching out for.  I loved the storyline and the reality of what Cassie and Blaze are put through.  If you can get past some minor editing issues and remember that Sam is from the U.K. so ignore the spelling differences, trust me you will love this story and be ready to read about the rest of the Sinclair men, I know I am.
