Rune is a Wyr sentinel and a gryphon, so he's been around for a long time.  Long enough to know owing a favor to the former queen of the vampires wasn't the smartest thing he's done, but since it saved his friend's life he'll accept the consequences.  But when he goes to pay off the debt, he realizes Carling is slowly dying, and she has no idea how to reverse it.  If that wasn't bad enough, she's having episodes where her Power flares and affects the area around her.

Deemed too dangerous to live by those who would love to see her gone forever, she must now rely on Rune's help if she's to find a cure in time.  And since meeting Rune, she's finally found a reason to live again.  And Rune, realizing his own feelings for Carling, couldn't agree more.
