Embrace the Night

by: Karen Chance
$7.99 mass market paperback

Paranormal Fantasy
Released: April 2008

Cassie has recently been named Pythia, the world's strongest clairvoyant.  She doesn't want the job or the power that goes with it, but realizes she's stuck with it for the time being.  She also has the more pressing matter of being magically bound to Vampire Senate member Mircea, a hot as sin vampire.  Unless Cassie finds a way to break the spell, and soon, then both of them will slowly go insane.

There's only one way to break the spell, and it can be found in the codex, and ancient spellbook.  Problem is, it doesn't exist in this time, so Cassie must travel back to the past to retrieve it.  It sounds easier than it is, and soon Cassie realizes why the Codex is so hard to find--if it ends up in the wrong hands, it can spell the destruction of earth.

Part of Cassie's powers as Pythia allow her to time travel at will, which she does quite often.  In this book, you see a lot of her bouncing back and forth in time, trying to follow clues that will help her retrieve the Codex.  This book seemed to lag a bit regarding action scenes, but since Karen Chance used the time to really develop the characters, it was okay.  Occasionally trying to follow the story while she goes back and forth in different time periods becomes a bit confusing, especially when they're talking about history (of which I have no interest), but other than that I was able to follow along just fine.

In this book, the plots get thicker, the characters become more relatable, and poor Cassie still has to deal with multiple people trying to kill her on a daily basis.  In other words, this book, and this whole series, rocks.
