Desmond's in trouble. His girlfriend Scarlet has caught the eye of the Emperor. To protect her, he must find a suitable distraction, so he and Gavin decide to purchase a human concubine for the Emperor. After he and Gavin purchase the beautiful but disturbing slave from a strange man, they gift her to the Emperor, who's delighted.
Now the path is clear for Desmond to marry Scarlet, but he must wait for her to return. She's on a mission with Gypsy, sent to kidnap Gypsy's husband before his insanity brings down the Empire. To make matters worse, Lilly is creating havoc everywhere she goes, and Desmond's beginning to wonder if Lilly is more than she appears...
This is book 8 in the series, and I would strongly recommend you read the previous books before jumping into this one. It's written with a familiarity of the characters that I didn't have, so I was a bit lost. I went back and read the blurbs for the first seven books, and while it didn't help much, it at least gave me a broad idea of who the characters were. Other than that, it was a good read, with plenty of action, drama, romance, and death. I prefer my books with some blood and gore, and Maniac Lullaby delivered. Anyone who likes a good plot and action, as well as romance, should try this book out (but start at the beginning of the series).
