NaNoWriMo Challenge 2010

As some of you may or may not know, November is National Novel Writing Month. There's a non-profit organization online that I just heard of, called NaNoWriMo.  If you go to, you'll find a writing challenge - to write 50,000 words between November 1st and November 30th.

Another thing some of you may not know is that I'm an unpublished author.  I've penned three titles, with a fourth in production.  Because I've been seriously slacking in my writing since Annette and I started this site back in June, I've decided to take the plunge back into writing by accepting the challenge.

And because a little competition is good for the soul, I'm challenging anyone who's interested to do the same.  I don't care if you're published or not, heck, I don't even care if you've never even thought about writing a book before, I say go for it.

If you complete the challenge, the organization will send you a web badge and a certificate.  But I don't think that's enough after slaving away in front of a computer screen, frying your poor brain.  As an added incentive, RomFan Reviews is going to give away gift baskets to the first five people who, at the end of November can prove that
  1. They signed up on the web page
  2. They actually wrote more than two words
  3. And if they hit the coveted mark, proof that they did so.

Because I've decided to take the challenge, I'm going to be off the grid for the next month.  Annette and Franny will hold down the fort, while I spend every waking moment in front of my computer, pounding out a story.

Yes, I know this doesn't give you much time to whip up a storyline, but I've known about for less than a week, so I'm not much better off.  Thank goodness I've got pages and pages of notes from the books I've already written; those will go a long way in helping me throw a story together.

To everyone who decides to be brave (or insane) like me and take the challenge, I say to you, good luck and I'll see you in a month.

When Ariel is kidnapped from Earth, she's shocked to learn of the existance of aliens.  What's worse is, after deeming her useless for breeding purposes, she learns she's to be given away as a prize to one of the slaves.  Forced to watch as the slaves known as the Zorn fight to the death for her, she's terrified, thinking she'll soon be joining the losers in death.

When Ral wins the fight, and also the beautiful but petite woman, he's thrilled.  Although she's nothing like the women of his species, there's something about her that calls to him.  Determined to keep her forever, he bonds with her, which keeps her safe from his kin.

Ariel's not sure what to think of her new master.  She's seen him kill to protect her, yet he's never harmed a hair on her head, and has treated her like a queen.  Despite herself, she finds herself falling for him.  When the chance for escape comes, she must decide whether to take her chances alone to find her way back home, or trust in the one man she's learned to care for.

Ariel freaks when she's captured and given to another slave, one that stands over a foot taller than her, with dark skin and razor sharp teeth.  But despite what Ral looks like, he's nothing but gentle with her.  Although she desperately wants to go home, she finds herself thinking that being with Ral is like being home, and that scares the spit out of her.  Ral was a mighty warrior on his planet before he was taken, and he's determined to get back there again, one way or another.  But he refuses to go anywhere without Ariel by his side.

This was a very sweet love story about two people from two different species overcoming several hurdles for the chance to be together.  The one problem I had was that some of the issues they faced seemed to get resolved too easily.  I would have loved to see more of a struggle, both with the plot and with the characters.  Other than that, I really enjoyed reading the story.

Anya's rotation on an array orbiting a distant moon is nearly over.  Only thirteen more days, and her exile is over.  The first thing she's going to do is go get laid.  But fate has something else in store for her...

The Damianos are a race of pure energy, and they're drawn to Anya's sexual pull.  They also have the unique ability to become multiple entities, leaving Anya in a sexual haze unlike anything she's ever known.

But her trysts with the Damianos are threatened when her boss sends a research team.  Having three men stuck in a small space with her will put an end to her carnal visits with the Damianos.  Or will it?

This is the third book of Kim Knox's that I have read, and I'm officially addicted.  Her books are so hot, you'll need a cold shower after you're done reading to recover.  It's too bad the stories are so short, but she manages to convey so much in just a short amount of time, Kim Knox is definitely going on my "authors to keep an eye out for" list.  Kudos!

Kenan, an incubus, is an avid collector of souls, especially women's.  When he finds a caged angel for sale at the Hellsgate marketplace, he's determined to have her soul.  After buying her and getting her cleaned up, he's instantly enthralled with her beauty and purity.  When she tells him she got caught while in pursuit of a girl's soul, he's driven to help her.  And when he tells himself it's so he can gain her trust to take her soul, he almost believes it.

As the two work together to find the girl's soul, he finds himself drawn to her more and more, and begins to wonder if his powers of seduction will work on her, when it seems she's the one with the siren's call.  But seduction will have to wait, because they've unearthed a plot by a shadowed player, one intent on starting a war between Heaven and Hell.  Now he must decide whether to let his angel go to keep her safe, or brave certain death to keep her by his side...forever.

I've always loved stories with angels and demons in it, and this book doesn't disappoint.  It's a great love story between two beings where love is forbidden, but neither care for the rules.  He's an incubus, she's an angel, so the two should hate each other, but dire circumstances throw them together, and teach them both what it is to care for another.  Throw in the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and you've got a pulse-pounding, edge of your seat thriller that sweeps you away.

My only problem was that the story was way too short.  I would love to see this book a little longer, or maybe make a series out of it.

Greg has spent the past eight years working the Renaissance faire when it comes to town, and he's depressed that this year will be his last.  Once he graduates college in a couple months, he needs to move on and do the whole "real job real life" thing.

The one bright point to this year's faire is the chance to see Boone, the handsome armorer who Greg spoke to briefly last year, but can't seem to get out of his mind.  When it seems like Greg's feelings are reciprocated, he's thrilled.

But things aren't as they seem with Boone, and a shocking revelation will test the tentative bond the two have formed.  Will the feelings Greg has keep him with Boone, or will Boone's secret drive him away...forever?

This was a great m/m love story, set against the backdrop of the Renaissance Faire.  Greg's spent a year thinking about and dreaming of Boone, a blacksmith who travels with the faire.  When Boone shows interest back, Greg thinks it'll be a great summer fling, a grand huzzah to his last year at the faire.  What he doesn't expect is how quickly his feelings for Boone deepen.  When Greg learns Boone's secret, he needs to search his feelings to see if he's willing to stay with Boone.

The character interaction grabbed me from the start, and the wry humor between the two was great.  I was really able to get a good picture of who they were, as well as the world the author built.  I was disappointed to see this book end, and I would love to see more stories set in this world.

Review: Lady Amberly's Lessons by Meta Matthews

Lady Amberly’s Lessons

$4.45 ebook
Ellora’s Cave
Historical Erotica
Released: November 2009

Lady Melloney Amberly has always been in love with her husband Edmund but when she discovers he still has a mistress because she does not please him in bed she sets out to learn how to keep him only in her bed.

When she seeks out the help of one of Edmund’s ex-mistresses she is soon finding herself blindfolded and a man named Jack showing her things she never even knew a woman was supposed to enjoy.

After several meetings with Jack Melloney is now ready to seduce Edmund to her bed will he be willing to give up his mistress and remain faithful to his wife or will Melloney fail in her endeavor?

Meta Matthews foray into erotica is off to a wonderful start. I really fell in love with this story, I felt Melloney’s pain at learning her husband’s betrayal and even though it was a little easy for me to guess what was going to happen I still could not stop reading until I reached the last word. I look forward to reading more from Meta.

Alex finds himself drawn to Raphael and is easily seduced into doing whatever Raphael wants as long as Alex also gets what he wants soon it becomes unclear as to who is the prisoner.

THE VAMPIRES PRISONER was way to short for my liking I was wanting more. It was a good storyline seeing a vampire at his weakest but still retain his inner strength. Overall it was an enjoyable quick read and would like to see more from Ms. Blackwell.

Review: Fang Bangers by Multiple Authors

Fang Bangers
by: Multiple Authors
$4.99 ebook
Ravenous Publishing
Paranormal Erotica / Anthology
Released: August 2010

Filled with a variety of short stories that have one thing in common the characters have fangs and are not afraid to use them. A total of fourteen stories by such authors as Cecilia Tan, Rebecca Leigh and Gina McQueen there is a little something for everyone.

Filled with vampires, werewolves, shape shifters and even a tripod and since they are short stories there is no waiting for the hot scenes the authors get right to them. You will find heterosexual couples, ménage, M/M and F/F what you won’t find is boredom.

There were a few of the stories I thoroughly enjoyed okay maybe most of them but I will admit there were a couple that went a little farther than even I could handle and I can take a lot. A couple of my favorites were FORBIDDEN PLEASURES by Rebeccah Leigh a vampire and werewolf coming together against the rules, THE BEST MAN by Elizabeth Thorne which brings a human woman to discover the man she is attracted to is a shape shifter and MATE RUN by Isabo Kelly is about two shape shifters in love who are willing to break the rules. These are just a few of the ones I really enjoyed.

The British truly know how to row and prove it as eight men stroke Joanna’s heart’s desire, all at the same time. Wow, it’s a bit hot in here after reading this tale. Over the years, Joanna, as Cox, sits in the stern of a row boat facing her men and shouting at the top of her lungs to guide them to victory in races.

With her heart aching at the thought of leaving the University to move on with her life, Joanna shares more than she imagines in a final celebration with her guys when she ends up telling them her fantasy: to have them all! None of them argue and set out to make her dream become reality. The experience will leave you breathless as creative desires are fulfilled one after another.

$4.50 ebook

Sci-Fi Erotica
Released: December 2010

All Catriona wanted to do was leave Earth, and her past, behind her.  What she doesn't expect is to find herself kidnapped by slavers and ending up as a sex slave on an alien auction block.  After being bought by a mysterious buyer, she's horrified when she meets him, her hopes crushed.  But just when things seem bleakest, she finds out the horrid creature in front of her isn't her new Master, but the infamous pirate captain Bayne.  Even though the things he makes her submit to are embarrassing, she finds herself drawn to him and submits.

Bayne is furious when he finds out one of his crew bought a slave with his money, and intends to take his displeasure out on the new slave.  When he sees her, however, he's instantly captivated by the fiery-tempered seductress before him.  But will he ever be able to tame her, because if he doesn't, she'll run away from him...forever.

This short story had a lot of plot in it.  Pretty much Catriona is snatched up by slavers while waiting at a spaceport on Earth.  When she realizes she's about to be sold to some alien as a sex slave, she freaks.  When she sees the guy that bought her, she wants to puke.  But when she sees her true Master, she doesn't know whether to break his nose, or submit to him in every way.  I had a few problems with this, most notably with Bayne.  His emotions kept bouncing around, and I had a hard time pegging him.  He just moved around too much from one end of the spectrum to the other.  Catriona was written very well, and I was able to easily get a feel for her.  The world building was done very well, and all necessary elements explained.

Matty is shocked when she finds herself back in the home she grew up in, without any recollection of why she's there.  To make matters worse, her uncle sells the house out from under her.  Luckily, the small print in the contract allows her to live in the attic, but she doesn't think the new owner will be too happy about that little stipulation...

Turner used to be a vampire historian of some renown, until a past mistake got him shunned from other vampires.  He's long lusted after Milford Hall, and jumps at the chance to buy it.  What he doesn't expect is the sexy little firecracker living in the attic, stubbornly refusing to leave.

Catch, Turner's former lover, comes to Milford Hall to warn Turner of enemies from the past bent on revenge.  What he doesn't expect are the feelings he still has for Turner, as well as an instant attraction to Matty.  Half vampire, half shifter, Catch's shifter side is claiming both as mate, which is impossible...isn't it?

As the danger grows near, the three are faced with a horrible revelation from within, and the outcome could change them all...forever.

This one sucked me in from the beginning, and the twist the author put in a few chapters in was awesome, making the story even better.  It added another level to the plot, and skillfully blended the two together.  Matty is an amazing woman, unafraid to stand up for herself and what she wants, and she wants Turner.  Turner thinks she's a pain in the rear, and tries to push her away, only to find himself thinking about her nonstop.  Add in an old boyfriend to the mix, and you've got yourself one steamy story.  A couple of the sex scenes got dragged out a bit longer than I liked, but thinking back on it, each one does serve a purpose in furthering the story.  Other than that, I really enjoyed this book, and I would recommend this for anyone who likes a steamy m/f/m book with lots of paranormal action, with a touch of violence.

Sex Symbol

$6.99 ebook
Ellora’s Cave
Paranormal Erotica / Shapeshifter
Released: October 2010

Who’d have thought that a simple rose tattoo could cause so much trouble? While Lucy Harper moons over her lost love after he dumped her, she becomes confused as she finds herself drawn to her new neighbor, a hunky bare-chested silent type. For some reason, he turns her on like no other and strangely enough her libido is burning out of control.

After weeks of staring at the man next door as he digs a huge hole in his yard, Lucy is more curious about what he’s like in bed than she is in what he’s planning on building…or burying. Her close friend, Oz, suddenly seems fit to satisfy her undeniable cravings for sex and they share a night of passion, only to meet up with a true to life werewolf.

When Oz and Eramus Creed, a man as mysterious as his name, meet, Lucy senses a strange friction between the two men. She’s sure that it’s not jealousy since Oz has already admitted to being a sociopath and having no emotional connection to her, yet somehow she gets the impression that Oz knows more than he’s willing to say.

Chased into Eramus’ arms by a werewolf, she’s not sure which of them wants to gobble her up more, fearful when Eramus admits that he’s a werewolf too. Now she has to decide which frying pan to sit in or leap into the flames with him.

The characters in this story are smart-mouthed and sassy, making the tale fun as the passion heats up between Lucy and Eramus who give just as good as they get. Our heroine is a feisty, strong-minded woman who doesn’t shy from a fight, standing up for herself and not taking chances with her life. They are entertaining and lively.

It was difficult not to turn the page and continue reading as the chapters left you hanging to move on to the next one. Only read this if you don’t need sleep because you won’t be able to put it down until you are cross-eyed.

This is the fourth book by Adrian Phoenix I've read, and her stories just keep getting better and better.  This new series is an intriguing look into a different culture, and the humor and character interaction was amazing.  I was sad to see the book end, but it was a great setup for book 2, which I can't wait to read.

Mace is in a desperate race against time to find a cure for her mentor, who's slowly dying of an unknown poison.  Her search leads her to Alec, a prominent scientist who agrees to help her find a cure.  The two quickly develop a friendship, although Mace is pretty sure Alec's interest runs deeper than that.

Things to south when a bounty hunter is sent after Alec.  He's shocked to see his old lover, Byron, is the one sent after him.  He's even more shocked to find out that Mace isn't the quiet scientist's assistant he thought she was.

The three form a reluctant truce, and focus on finding a cure for Mace's mentor.  But as the old flames from Alec and Byron are rekindled, the two both find themselves drawn to Mace, who fits perfectly into their triad.  But can they convince her of their feelings, or will the ghosts of her past provide too big of a hurdle for them to jump?

In this story, Mace is trying to find a cure for her mentor, the man who raised her after her parents died.  In desperation, she turns to Alec, the best and last hope she has of finding a cure.  The attraction between them is there, but since Alec never made a move, she's not sure if she's reading his intent correctly.  When Byron shows up, she sees the sparks between the two, although it seems like they'd rather kill each other than jump into bed.  She already cares for Alec, but Byron has her initially wanting to bury her fist in his face.  The character interaction was great, and I loved the dynamic between the three.  The problems and emotional baggage are all too real (although sadly, the space travel is not), and I found myself riveted to the story, unable to put it down until I was done.  I was very satisfied with the way the story unfolded, and I plan to keep my eyes open for anything else Christine d'Abo writes, because she's an author to keep track of.  Anyone who loves space travel, science, menage, and a bit of sass should give this book a try.

Taelen is determined to find the existence of the Nephilim, the gods his people worship.  An alien, he's on Earth with the government's consent, and doesn't plan to leave until he finds what he's looking for.

What he doesn't expect to find is Rachel, head of the archaelogical dig his team takes over.  When a flash flood hits, he's compelled to save her, even though he knows he shouldn't.  When her injuries seem to miraculously heal right before his eyes, he thinks she's somehow been blessed by his gods, and dares to hope he's finally found them.

What he doesn't realize is that Rachel harbors a secret, one that threatens not only her life, but the lives of the gods he worships.  Now the two must race against time to find the cause of this mysterious god-killer before it's too late.

This book had everything I could have hoped for - action, adventure, romance, intrigue, mystery, and amazing characters.  Add a solid plot to the mix, and you have the makings of a great novel.  There were a few times I wanted to slap the characters for their stubborness and failure to see the obvious, but that was also the reason I kept reading, hoping they'd finally realize what I already knew, and I wasn't disappointed.  Anyone who likes a story with aliens, history, romance, and mass mayhem should give this book a try.

After narrowly escaping a murder attempt, Scharsi is content with her new life, staying in the shadows to avoid detection.  But when she comes home to find the only man who ever cared for her lying in a pool of his own blood, she knows her quiet life is over.  Vowing revenge on the ones who killed her friend, she heads out to begin her hunt.

She doesn't expect to run across a man drenched in blood, and wearing her friend's clothes to boot.  After knocking him out and taking him aboard her ship, she learns he was neared killed by the Amalgamation-the people he used to work for.  Even though she suspects him of taking part in her friend's death, she can't help but notice the overpowering attraction to him.

But personal feelings will have to wait, because she's on a mission of revenge, and the Amalgamation's about to learn what happens when you mess with a bounty hunter.

Scharsi just wanted to be left alone and off the radar, but the return of the Amalgamation ruined that.  Now she's out for revenge, and nothing will get in her way.  When Tanil shows up bruised and bloody, she's not sure if he's a part of her friend's death, or a victim like her.  The two are instantly drawn to each other, although trust is harder to come by.  This was a great story of revenge and redemption, and of setting free a person's true nature.  It's about courage and love, of overcoming all obstacles in your path to avenge those you love.  And the story having bounty hunters just made it that much better.  :)
